For almost two decades, Margaret Bishop-Gulley has been working to keep the citizens of Sumter County ready for anything. In her current role as the Sumter County Emergency Management Director, she puts people first and is always ready to be helpful.

And being ready for “anything” is an apt description – Sumter County is no stranger to all sorts of disasters, especially severe weather. Tornadoes, flooding and even an occasional brush with snow are a regular part of life in west Alabama and Director Bishop-Gulley has seen more than her fair share. The Director has announced that she will move into a part-time advisory role and then fully retire once her replacement is trained.

AEMA Division C held its quarterly meeting on July 23 at the Wilcox County EOC – and part of the agenda was a celebration in her honor.

Director Bishop-Gulley is widely respected and well-known in the emergency management industry.

AEMA Director of Field Operations Ricky Adams worked with her for years, saying, “Mrs. Margaret exemplifies the very best of professional emergency management – calm under pressure, prepared in every circumstance and dedicated to protecting others. Beyond her expertise, she is a genuinely kind and humble person whose warmth and integrity leave a lasting impression on everyone she meets.”

As her long and distinguished career winds down, she leaves these words of wisdom for the next generation of emergency managers:

“Be open – for any type of conversation, especially with people who have been in the business for a long time. Ask questions!”
