Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has submitted an official request for a “major disaster declaration” from the President through FEMA.
If and when that request is approved by the President, multiple types of federal assistance become possible.
This assistance can take several forms.
Individual Assistance is exactly what it sounds like – direct financial assistance from FEMA to individuals for uninsured or underinsured losses.
Public Assistance is not what it sounds like – it is not “for” the public individually. Instead, Public Assistance is money that goes from FEMA to help rebuild public infrastructure – think roads, bridges, etc. – damaged in the storm.
A “Major Disaster Declaration” could also open the door to SBA loan programs and hazard mitigation grants that apply in disaster situations.
