FEMA assessment teams have joined county and state experts for a joint “Preliminary Damage Assessment” in Alabama. This assessment will help determine if the damage in the state reaches federal assistance thresholds. If the teams determine that the damage has met those thresholds, that will empower the Governor to request a Major Disaster Declaration from the President through FEMA.

If and when that Major Disaster Declaration request is made – and if and when it is approved by the President, multiple types of federal assistance become possible.

This assistance can take several forms.

Individual Assistance is exactly what it sounds like – direct financial assistance from FEMA to individuals for uninsured or underinsured losses.

Public Assistance is not what it sounds like – it is not “for” the public individually. Instead, Public Assistance is money that goes from FEMA to help rebuild public infrastructure – think roads, bridges, etc. – damaged in the storm.

A “Major Disaster Declaration” could also open the door to SBA loan programs that apply in disaster situations.
