Some Snowfall Possible In Southern Counties

By Jim Stefkovich, Meteorologist, Alabama Emergency Management Agency

CLANTON – Saturday, 700 am, January 17, 2026

An area of rain east of I-65 and south of I-85 will exit the state this morning.  After a short dry period, rain will begin moving into the southern sections late this afternoon or evening, mainly south of a Livingston – Montgomery – Auburn line. Rain will mix with and possibly change to snow between 12 am – 3 am generally east of I-65 and south of I-85, ending by 12 pm.

As you can see from the probability graphics, less than an inch of snowfall accumulation is possible and that will be in grassy areas.  No road impacts are expected especially since temperatures this afternoon will rise into the 50s, warming the pavement before tonight.

Temperatures between 5 am – 9 am are forecast to lower to 30-35 degrees and there could be a few slick spots on bridges if any standing water occurs and temperatures reach 32 degrees.  Temperatures after 9 am will rise above freezing with highs Sunday afternoon in the middle to upper 50s.

Henry County (north of Dothan) is under a Winter Weather Advisory from 3 am – 11 am Sunday. The NWS criteria for a Winter Weather Advisory is only 0.25 inch snow accumulation.  It is not out of the question for other southern counties to be included in the advisory in later updates, but again, only due to light amounts accumulating in grassy areas.
