Accumulating Snowfall Potential Continues to Shift Southeastward

By Jim Stefkovich, Meteorologist, Alabama Emergency Management Agency

CLANTON – Friday, 10:30 AM, January 16, 2026

An upper-level system will produce showers that will enter the northwestern portions of the state this evening, move southeastward, and potentially continue into Saturday afternoon across the southeastern portions.  Total amounts of precipitation will be 0.5 inch or less.  There could be a brief period of rain/snow mixed near and north of the Tennessee River between 12 AM and 3 AM tonight.  No impacts are expected.

A second system will produce light rain beginning Saturday evening across the southern half of Alabama, generally south of a Livingston-Montgomery-Auburn line.   The rain may mix with and possibly change to light snow between 12 AM and 10 AM Sunday, east of I-65 and south of I-85.

Models continue to show higher chances of accumulating snowfall shifting eastward away from Alabama and into Georgia.  With that said, there will be a brief time between 3 AM – 9 AM when temperatures reach the upper 20s to lower 30s, so any standing water could freeze on bridges and overpasses.
