Icy Spots Reported Across Alabama this Morning

By Jim Stefkovich, Meteorologist, Alabama Emergency Management Agency

CLANTON – 730 am, December 11, 2018

The first graphic is the 7 am temperatures, which are below freezing as far south as Hwy 80 – I85. The National Weather Service has issued a Freezing Fog Advisory until 9 am for the areas in dark green. The light green on the graphic are for River Flood Warnings.

A number of accidents have been reported around the Birmingham metro area, and DeKalb county in north Alabama has reported icy spots as well.

Temperatures are expected to go above freezing for near and south of I20 at 9 am and across the northern sections after 10 am. However, there are always colder spots in valleys and shaded areas/roads that will take a couple of hours longer to warm above freezing.

If at all possible, avoid travel until late morning. If you must travel, use extreme caution and slow down if you encounter wet pavement and especially on bridges and overpasses.2
