Alabama EMA Encourages Alabamians To Participate in the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut Earthquake Drill

CLANTON – On October 18, 2018 at 10:18 a.m. Alabama Emergency Management Agency along with other organizations across the nation will participate in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill.  The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut helps Alabamians prepare for an earthquake.  Alabama residents, schools, businesses, local, state and federal government agencies and many other groups are encouraged to register and participate in the Great ShakeOut.

During the drill, participants simultaneously practice the recommended response to earthquake shaking:

  • DROP to the ground
  • Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, or cover your head/neck with your arms, and
  • HOLD ON until the shaking stops

Did you know that Alabama had 115 small earthquakes in the last 10 years? Some of the larger earthquakes in Alabama’s history include a 5.2 magnitude in the Birmingham area, and a 4.9 magnitude near Fort Payne (Geological Survey of Alabama). If this happened in your city, would you be prepared? Learn what to do by practicing in an earthquake drill by participating in the Great Central U.S. Shakeout!

More than 2.1 million people have registered to participate in this year’s Great ShakeOut. Anyone can sign up to participate and we encourage everyone to register by visiting www.shakeout.org/centralus/register.

If you and your family or organization would like to hold your own earthquake drill, all required materials including manuals, audio, video and simulated earthquake conditions are available at www.shakeout.org/centralus.
