Our mission is to prepare the state of Alabama and its citizens for responding to and recovering from all technical/man-made disasters.

Radiological Emergency Preparedness (REP) - The REP mission is to ensure that the State is prepared to cope with radiological emergencies, assess what actions need to occur, and recovery from any radiological incident which occurs at a nuclear power plant. REP is organized to provide planning, training, assist in the development and evaluation of State and Local REP programs. REP personnel works with Federal, State, and Local Governments, business and industry in the development of radiological emergency capabilities necessary to ensure public safety and protection in the event of a radiological emergency. REP personnel also develops and implements training and educational programs for citizens as well as emergency management, law enforcement, fire departments, and non-governmental entities in preparation for radiological emergencies.

Waste Isolation Pilot Program (WIPP) - The US Department of Energy’s mission is to ensure the safe transportation of Transuranic, or TRU, radioactive waste to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) for permanent disposal. Since 1999, WIPP has set the standard for safe, permanent disposal of long-lived radioactive defense wastes.

Hazard Material Emergency Program (HMEP)-Federal Hazardous Material Law authorizes the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to provide assistance to public sector employees through training and planning grants to States, Territories, and Native American tribes for emergency response. The purpose of this grant program is to increase State, Territorial, Tribe, and local effectiveness in safely and efficiently handling hazardous materials accidents and incidents, enhance implementation of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 (EPCRA), and encourage a comprehensive approach to emergency training and planning by incorporating the unique challenges or responses to transportation situations.
