Be Prepared

 Snow & Ice

While areas in the higher elevations of North Alabama typically experience greater threats from wintry conditions, it is not unusual for areas throughout our state to face hazards presented by ice and snow. Because we are not faced with ice and snow on a regular basis, often many Alabamians find themselves ill prepared when faced with winter hazards. These steps will help you to be better prepared.

Planning
When ice or snow accumulates on trees, phone lines and power lines, the weight can cause breakage, which results in loss of power and telephone communication for nearby residents. In the event of a power outage, it's important that you have an emergency supply kit ready in your home or business.

  • Winter Storm Supply Kit:
  • Portable Kerosene Heater
  • Firewood
  • First aid kit / essential medications
  • Canned food and can opener
  • At least three gallons of water per person
  • Protective clothing, bedding, or sleeping bags
  • Battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries
  • Special items for infant, elderly, or disabled family members

Preparedness
If possible, you should always stay indoors during intense winter conditions and avoid road travel when snow or ice is present on roadways.

  • If you must go outside, wear layers of clothing as opposed to a single heavy coat. Gloves (or mittens) and a hat also prevent loss of body heat.
  • Walk carefully on snowy or icy sidewalks.

Avoid traveling by car in a storm, but if you must...

  • Carry an Emergency Supplies Kit in the trunk.
  • Keep your car's gas tank full for emergency use and to keep the fuel line from freezing.
  • Let someone know your destination, your route, and your estimated time of arrival. If your car gets stuck along the way, help can be sent along your predetermined route.
  • Stay away from down power lines.

If you happen to get stuck or stranded in snowy or icy conditions, it is important that you stay with your vehicle.

  • Stay with your car. Do not attempt to walk to safety.
  • Start the car and use the heater for 10 minutes each hour.
  • Leave overhead lights on when the engine is running so that you can be seen.
  • Move your arms and legs to keep blood circulating to stay warm.
  • Keep a window away from the blowing wind open to allow for proper ventilation.

Response
Following snowy or icy conditions, it is very important that you stay tuned to weather updates and travel conditions. Always be aware that even if the roadway appears clear, ice is sometimes present, especially in shady areas.
