 Radiological

The Alabama Emergency Management Agency works with various state agencies including the Alabama Department of Public Health and the utilities that operate two nuclear power plant facilities in the state. Those facilities are the Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority in Limestone County and the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Power Plant operated by Southern Nuclear Company in Houston County. The Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program (REPP) Branch maintains the State REPP plan and Standard Operating Procedures for preparedness and response. AEMA's REP program involves off-site activities around the nuclear power plants. This means local emergency plans involving preparedness efforts in communities near the power plant sites. On site preparedness is the responsibility of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

These plans are exercised on an annual basis at the State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Clanton and at Local EOCs and the power plant facilities. FEMA evaluates and grades state and local plans on these exercises on a bi-annual basis. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) evaluates and grades the utilities annually on exercise plans. AEMA and affected county EMAs in cooperation with the utilities provide emergency preparedness information to residents in the emergency planning zones that provide vital information on what actions to take in the unlikely event of a power plant accident.
